REITER will show Dan Stockholm’s work »Don’t think about death«, which was realized in Damascus in 2016. It is a filmed performative interaction made in collaboration with Syrian artist Nourhan Sondok.
In the film we see children in Damascus using chunks of destroyed buildings like chalk to draw on the ground. Sondok has collected architectural fragments from all over Damascus for the film: from 4,000-year-old columns to recent buildings that were destroyed in the Syrian conflict. What is deliberately not visible in the film is the catastrophic and hostile environment in Damascus during the civil war. Although the children are in the middle of the war zone, this scenery of childlike and carefree drawing could take place in any western city during peacetime.
