For Drawing Now 2022 Maurits van de Laar Gallery proposes Stan Klamer (1951) as artist in focus. Klamer sees drawing as a form of cartography. Thus the topographic map becomes a metaphor for reality in which the artist can freely apprehend and retranscribe his personal universe.
Islands, maps, the sea, boats and ships play an important role in Stan Klamer's work. His studio overlooks the IJ, the river of Amsterdam, where all kinds of ships pass every day. He often starts a drawing with a random spot of ink or watercolor, and then works around it with great detail and precision, in an almost meditative way.
